Patch Details:

The Helix and the Kemper and both fantastic units in their own right, but when paired they make for an incredible setup that not only sounds incredible but is also unbelievably versatile. In addition they act as backups for each other, just in case something goes terribly wrong at a gig! For these reasons I decided to really explore this pairing, spending months and months tweaking and adjusting one do it all patch that could cover any genre, any gig, without needing to make any radical changes. Well after lots of trial and error over lots of live use this is what I was left with! A patch that features several overdrives, modulations, delays and reverb before the kemper amp, as well as stereo delays, modulations and my special ModVerb Helix reverb setup after the amp.

The only thing you might have to adjust are the levels and gain settings for the overdrives or delays/reverbs before the amp depending on your profile choices and the gain they use. Everything else should be good to go out of the box!

Update 4-15-21: I have updated this patch due to a Line 6 bug that was discovered. In addition I’ve include a stereo kemper/amp version for when you want to run into the front of two kempers or amps for stereo. Enjoy!

How to Setup the Kemper and Helix:

To get them to work together only takes a couple extra cables and a few settings adjustments. This patch is made for the kemper to be run in 4CM with the Helix, which means the Kemper is able to be placed in the middle of the fx chain and your output can be stereo. Simply run one 1/4 cable out of the Helix FX Send 1 to the input of the kemper. Than run 2 guitar cables back from the stereo 1/4 outputs of the kemper into the first stereo FX return on the Helix. Once you do that you should get sound! When using this setup live you’ll simply go out of the Helix output (XLR or 1/4) just like you would if you were only using the Helix. Easy!

Recommended Settings:

After much trial and error I recommend the following setting changes on both units:

• Set input to ALT Input on Kemper (located on the back) and use that instead of the front input. The Alt Input has a bit more headroom
  • To do this hold the Kemper’s Input button and change input to ALT Input
• Set Kemper Master Output to -20dB or less
  • The Kemper’s output is quite hot and may Clip the Helix’s FX Return input if set too high
• Set Helix to 10 Stomp Mode so that you can see all of the footswitches available to you
  • Only relevant on Helix Floor, not LT
• Set Helix Input Pad to “Off”
  • Trial and error, you may prefer “On” but I liked the full signal more

As for FX settings, it all depends on the amp profile you’re using the on the kemper. Depending on the profile or gain you may want to adjust the level and gain of the overdrives, as well as the mix of the wet FX before the FX send. Don’t be afraid to make adjustments to fit your needs. In addition, nearly every effect you could ever want in any genre is already in the patch however there are only 10 footswitches available. Feel free to switch footswitch assignments to what you need at that moment in time, i.e. you may want to change out a delay or modulation assignment. The only one you should not touch is the ModVerb and Medium/Big footswitches as they have complex assignments set to them. The rest is fair game. I would also recommend utilizing snapshots, they are a big part of what makes this setup so incredible!
